Families of fallen Front for National Salvation (FRONASA) fighters in Kabale Municipality have been honoured ahead of the Tarehe Sita celebrations in recognition of their role in Uganda’s struggle to overthrow the regime of Idi Amin.
The commemorations are intended to honour the bravery of the deceased combatants while giving their families an opportunity to recount painful memories that have lingered decades after their loss.
One such ceremony took place in Rwakaraba, Southern Division of Kabale Municipality, at the home of the late Joseph Bitwari, a former Kabale District Commissioner and FRONASA member.
Family members shared emotional accounts of his final days and the circumstances surrounding his death.
Speaking to the media, his second-born son, Abert Barigye Bitwari, said the family initially learned through a radio announcement that their father and other fighters had been arrested rather than killed.
“The family later went to a stadium where the military had detained the three men. Religious leaders, including the late Bishop Festo Kivengere, prayed for them as they waved goodbye to their loved ones before being executed. Two of the men died immediately, while Joseph Bitwari was shot a second time before passing away,” Barigye said.
He reflected on the widespread fear and instability that characterised life under Idi Amin’s rule, contrasting it with the relative peace and security Uganda enjoys today under the Uganda People’s Defence Forces.
The family also commended President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for restoring peace and stability to the country and for recognising the sacrifices made by FRONASA fighters.
“We want to commend President Museveni for training the army well. Currently, the UPDF is a disciplined force and one that associates well with civilians,” Barigye said.
The recognition of the families ahead of Tarehe Sita underscored the importance of preserving the history of the FRONASA fighters and passing on stories of their courage and sacrifice to younger generations whose lives continue to be shaped by that legacy.
